Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD)

Understanding the Condition
These include developmental and neurocognitive disorders that are organic in nature and often present since the birth of a child. Occasionally, these conditions manifest later, around the 2nd to 3rd year of life.
They involve deficits in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Severity can range from mild to profound, significantly affecting the individual’s reasoning, problem-solving, learning, communication, and capacity for independent living.
Multifactorial Causes
The causes of NDDs can be highly varied, multifactorial, and often overlap in symptoms. They include:
- Genetic syndromes
- Brain malformities
- Spinal & neural tube defects
- Prematurity & low birth weight
- Maternal or parental diseases
- Inborn errors of metabolism
- Environmental exposures
- Birth asphyxia / labour complications
- Maternal substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco, medications)
Spectrum & Prevalence
These disorders encompass a wide range of specific diagnoses and developmental dysfunctions:
Other associated conditions include hearing disabilities, social communication dysfunction, seizures, muscle dystonia, and stereotypic movement disorders.
Incidence in India:
Approximately 11.4% in the age group of 2 to 9 years.
The Importance of Early Intervention
Early intervention programs provided during infancy and preschool years are critical. They actively stimulate comprehensive development and maximize the child's potential for learning and independence.
